Review: The Almost Truth

The Almost Truth
The Almost Truth by Eileen Cook

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is my third [a:Eileen Cook|1049315|Eileen Cook|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1215809433p2/1049315.jpg] book. As much as I enjoyed the first two ([b:The Education of Hailey Kendrick|7828668|The Education of Hailey Kendrick|Eileen Cook|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347930413s/7828668.jpg|10885086]and [b:Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood|6431026|Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood|Eileen Cook|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348174855s/6431026.jpg|6620490])this is easily my favorite. This story twists and turns and you think you have it figured out, then you change your mind, then you change your mind again. A powerful and heart felt book that will make you question a lot of things that on the surface seem easy. I can't say much about it without giving away important things. Go read it.

Review: Safe Haven

Safe Haven
Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is actually my first Nicholas Sparks novel. Several friends had recommended him in general and this book in particular. I did enjoy it very much. A good story, well told with some surprise twists. However, that being said, for being a superstar author I do not think his stuff was any better, and in fact not likely as good as the stuff I am reading from a lot of indie authors, in particular Colleen Hoover[a:Colleen Hoover|5430144|Colleen Hoover|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1333056335p2/5430144.jpg], Nyrae Dawn[a:Nyrae Dawn|5784345|Nyrae Dawn|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1354150152p2/5784345.jpg], Steph Campbell [a:Steph Campbell|2156112|Steph Campbell|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1335935991p2/2156112.jpg] Liz Reinhardt [a:Liz Reinhardt|5189109|Liz Reinhardt|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1333942846p2/5189109.jpg], Abbi Glines[a:Abbi Glines|4872191|Abbi Glines|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1345377921p2/4872191.jpg], Shirley Miranda [a:Shirley Miranda|5836002|Shirley Miranda|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1339204673p2/5836002.jpg], Jolene Perry [a:Jolene Perry|6471427|Jolene Perry|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1355691210p2/6471427.jpg], and Jessica Park [a:Jessica Park|22159|Jessica Park|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1354550017p2/22159.jpg].

Fame and talent are not necessarily the same thing.

Review: The Rock Star's Daughter

The Rock Star's Daughter
The Rock Star's Daughter by Caitlyn Duffy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nothing ground breaking or earth shaking, but a wonderful little story about overcoming hardship, loss and growing up. I got this because it looked okay and was free on Amazon, sure glad I did. There are two more in the series, and I will be buying them and reading them soon.

Review: Graffiti Moon

Graffiti Moon
Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another book that Nyrae Dawn has recommended to me. Another great book. Written by an Australian, the idioms and meter of the words are just a bit off from North American standards, but added flavor for that. Ms Crowley has a wonderful way with words. She paints with them as if they were, well paint, and the page merely an empty canvass. I will be looking for more of her works. A wonderful book for all ages.

Review: Poseidon's Arrow

Poseidon's Arrow
Poseidon's Arrow by Clive Cussler

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

. Look at this point Clive Cussler has his formula down pat. If it is one you like, you will enjoy this book, if not no. I'm a fan. Fun easy little brain Twinkies. The heroes are heroic, the bad guys deliciously evil, and the babes always hot and ass kicking. Fun little escapes, a mini vacation for the brain. I read all his stuff and it never fails to give me exactly what I want. Is he Shakespeare? No. Is he a rip roaring good time? Yes.

DEPTHS Cover Reveal!

Cohen Rodriguez, Deo’s hilarious and loyal best friend in LENGTHS, has always been über responsible. He’s kept a steady job, is a generally nice guy, and has had the same steady girlfriend for years. But when she breaks up with him because he's 'not impulsive enough,' Cohen's burned up.
But, just maybe, she’s more right than he wants to admit.
So he starts to date.
A lot.
And he meets some really fun, crazy, smart, weird girls. But no one really feels like the one, and the more girls he dates, the more Cohen’s convinced she isn’t really out there.

Luckily he has Maren— the girl with the sexy voice who always cracks the best jokes, and who Cohen can talk to about anything, even all of his recent dating mishaps. They've been talking daily for a year…on the phone. They talk about orders for work at first, but eventually Cohen finds out that Maren loves baseball and Thai food and she loves going to the beach in the winter and sketching. He looks forward to his talks with Maren, because, like everything else in his life, they’re safe.

Then she asks him.

Do you want to meet?

It's one thing to chat for an hour or two every day. Meeting face to face could ruin the one and only stable, fun woman in his life.
Or it could be the best thing that's ever happened to him.

Cohen has to decide if he's ready to let go of his comfortable fantasy and embrace the girl who can change his luck in love.

And! If you haven't read the first installment of the LENGTHS series,
it's on-sale for a limited time for both kindle and nook!

Review: A Game Worth Watching

A Game Worth Watching
A Game Worth Watching by Samantha Gudger

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An amazing, even surprising first effort for a young author. Highly enjoyable story told in gripping fashion. Though the idea that the two main protagonists would end up in love was no surprise, indeed it is almost a requirement in this genre, how they got there was a fun and happy ride. The female protagonist was someone that pulls you in and makes you cheer for them, even when she might not be cheering for herself. The male, a good guy like you'd wish your daughter would find.

I'm looking forward to more books from Ms Gudger.

Review: Lucky Break

Lucky Break
Lucky Break by Kelley Vitollo

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An enjoyable yarn. Not as detailed, emotionally deep or richly drawn as her work under her real name, but still a good story told well. Obviously a book made to be a series, but you don;t mind that when all the characters and the place it takes place are all likable. I've already bought number 2 and will be reading it soon.

Review: Beautiful Things Never Last

Beautiful Things Never Last
Beautiful Things Never Last by Steph Campbell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is one of those books that I have been dying to read ever since I heard it was being written. As the follow up to GROUNDING QUINN, I knew it would be worth the read. Quinn was one of my early YA/NA books, and I loved it, in fact it was on my Top-10 list last year. Quinn is quite likely my number one all time book crush. I just love the girl, Steph Campbell has brought her to complex, rich, real life. Now, even more so. This follow up book is simply amazing. I wish I had more stars to give.

One of the reasons I love Quinn is she reminds me of someone from my past, and to a degree my own past. Ben, her love interest too suffers from some of the things I did. Watching them grow, and overcome obstacles was wonderful. I'm especially struck by how perfectly Ms Campbell got the problems that come from a deep seated need to be needed. It was once the curse of my life before I learned to understand it, and realize that someone needing me in a different more mature way was a better thing than the clinging to me like a lifeline. She just so nailed that part of life that it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up a couple of times. how the side characters in this book interacted with the main protagonists served to make it a rich emotional, and very life like tapestry.

This is easily one of my favorite books of all time and my best read of the year so far. i'm rereading GROUNDING QUINN then it again right now. It is hardly even reading, it is more like visiting loved ones.

Review: Perfectly Unmatched

Perfectly Unmatched
Perfectly Unmatched by Liz Reinhardt

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did because in FALL GUY, I was not at all enamoured of Benelli. Man was i wrong. this book makes you understand why she was what she was, and love her despite her flaws. I think this is my new fav Liz Reinhardt book. Liked the insight into the Youngblood family, loved Cormac.

Looking forward to the next book in this series. would love to hear Ithica's story in detail. hoping that will happen soon.

My Top 10 Reads of 2012 List

Vandeervecken's Top Ten Best Reads of 2012 List

Here is my annual list of the 10 best books I read in the last year, and a few that just missed the list. This is subjective, based solely on what moved me and what did not. I'm thinking next year of upping the number to a top 20 list because I read so many good books this year, and found two new genre's, Young Adult, and New Adult where a lot of great young writers are working telling great stories. Here is the list:

1: Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
2: Slammed by Colleen Hoover
3: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover
4: Easy by Tammara Webber
5: Freeing Carter by Nyrae Dawn
6: Grounding Quinn by Steph Campbell
7: Flat Out Love by Jessica Park
8: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
9: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
10: The Outpost by Jake Tapper

Honorable Mention
If I Stay + Where She Went by Gayle Forman
Bits and Pieces Series by Shirley Miranda
Story of a Girl By Sara Zarr
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series by Stieg Larson
Hunger Games Trilogy Suzanne Collins
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

Why They Made The List

1: Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

This is one of the best books I have ever read. A complex and moving story about life and the twists and turns life throws at you. I do not do spoilers, but let me say there is no emotion known to human kind that you will not feel when reading this book.

2: Slammed by Colleen Hoover
Another simply great book about life. Colleen writes complex characters dealing with all aspects of life, death, parenting, and dealing with both the extraordinary and mundane that life throws at you all the time. I thought this was a lock on my best book of the year till Hopeless came out in the last couple of days of the year.

3: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

Colleen completes the Top-3 trifecta with this follow up to Slammed. I simply could not put it down. Everything I said about Slammed continues to apply here. These two books make up one of the best love stroies Ihave ever read.

4: Easy by Tammara Webber

An amazing and affecting novel. The difference between this on the 3 books about it is microscopic. Any one of them could arguably be the best book I read last year. This book should be mandatory reading in High School. A love story yes, but it is oh so much more than that as well. This book initiated a long and serious conversation about life, and men and women between myself and my teen daughter as we read it together.

5: Freeing Carter by Nyrae Dawn

Another book that in all fairness deserves to be higher than 5. One of the best examples of a family dealing with functional alcoholism I have ever read. As someone who grew up in a family with alcohol and drug problems, I have to say she nailed it. Ms Dawn also writes male point of view better than most men. I am especially impressed when she is writing about what males are thinking, because it is how men think. So many women writing male POV come across as women guessing. This woman is well beyond that. I've read every one of her books and ANY of them would not be out of place on this list.

6: Grounding Quinn by Steph Campbell

I loved this book a lot. The title character Quinn reminds of some of the young women I loved in my youth. She is so beautiful in every important way and doesn’t know it. So many times I wanted to reach into this book and hug her and tell her it would all be okay. Profoundly moving.

7: Flat Out Love by Jessica Park

So unexpected. So unlike anything else I have ever read. This book strikes you to your emotional core again and again, and every time you think you have it figured out it surprises, and strikes you again. I exclaimed out loud at one point, and by the way, have Kleenex handy.

8: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

A wonderful book about the different types of families out there. An exploration into not just love, but honor and duty, and honesty as well. You cannot read this book and remain unmoved.

9: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

A very different type of book, written in a very different way. Emotionally exhausting, often depressing, no clean or easy answers, and yet so very moving. Another book that lead to long serious life discussions between my teen daughter and myself. Another book I think should be on High School reading lists.

10: The Outpost by Jake Tapper

This book pissed me off to no end, and should be required reading for all US citizens. The true story of an outpost in Afghanistan and the lives and deaths of the troops we sent there. If this book does not piss you off I question your humanity.

Honorable Mention
If I Stay + Where She Went by Gayle Forman

Moving, real, and unforgettable.

Bits and Pieces Series by Shirley Miranda

You learn quickly to love the protagonists and feel a part of their journey.

Story of a Girl By Sara Zarr

Another book that opened great dialogue between my daughter and myself about life,m consequences and reputation.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series by Stieg Larson

Interesting, complex, and unlike anything I have read. Great adventure/thriller.

Hunger Games Trilogy Suzanne Collins

Wonderful dystopian series that paints a very real picture of the society there.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

My favorite Dessen book, there are several others I might put here too. She is a great writer and lots of fun.

20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler

A great book about life and death. Another one that lead to wonderful life discussions with my daughter.

Review: Threat Vector

Threat Vector
Threat Vector by Tom Clancy

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Exactly what I expected, fun, written well enough, but obviously not really Clancy. His ghost riders keep the flavor of his work, but it isn't as strong. If you are a fan you will like it, but borrow it from the library, not worth the cost of new.

Review: The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A profoundly moving memoir of growing up in a wildly unorthodox family amidst hunger and neglect. Ms Walls style of writing makes you feel a part of the family on their misadnvetures, and at times you can even feel the hunger gnawing at your belly as the kids talk of pulling garbage out of bathroom cans at school for lunches. This book reminded my of a family I knew well once, and at times hit hard."

Thank you Deena Bright for the recommendation! I'd never heard of it, and I loved it. Just bought her Half Broke Horses book too.
