Review: Charade

Charade
Charade by Nyrae Dawn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was just plain an amazing book. Why Nyrae Dawn is not yet a household name I know not. This is a sad, tragic, thoughtful, uplifting, and finally triumphant emotional roller coaster of a book. I laughed, I cried, I cried some more, I smiled, and I cried some more. I got turned on, I got a warm feeling in the cockles of my heart. If you can read this book and not FEEL with every fiber of your being, you lack an emotional center.

Nyrae Dawn is already a master at the male POV voice, and she is every bit as good with the female. Her books are completely believable, and damn hard to put down. Go open a fresh box of kleenex and read this book. Colt and Cheyenne will become as real to you as your old college friends, and you will feel for them every step of their amazing journey.

Ms Dawn is now on my unquestioned "Buy it now" list. I buy her books the day they come out and I don't even need to bother to read the blurb. If she wrote it, I want to read it and NOW!

Review: Fall Guy

Fall Guy
Fall Guy by Liz Reinhardt

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was by far the steamiest book I have read in a while. A good story, well told, and oh my, make sure you have a partner handy as you read it. I liked this companion to the Brenna Blixon books more than the origonal books, but then I like Evan a lot more than Brenna. Winchester is a good classic NA male, dark, mysterious a bit of a bad boy but with a good heart. A fun read, and did I mention it is, wow, steamy?

Inkheart
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really liked this book a lot. In fact far more than I expected. It was a lot better than the movie, but then that is not unusual. Still liked the movie but this had so much more heart and depth. A truly original take on things too.

Review: My Life Next Door

My Life Next Door
My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Several friends recommended this, a couple didn't like it so much. I did like it quite a bit. Once again a book about questioning who you really are, and what your proper place in the world is. More important even, to whom or what do you owe your loyalty. I cannot talk about much that happens in this book without giving things away. Suffice it to say, I had a hard time putting it down.

Review: Trading Faces

Trading Faces
Trading Faces by Ann Herrick

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really liked this book. On the surface it was a quick fun read about two people who find themselves switched into each others bodies. One a popular hottie, the other an invisible girl who considers herself plain. Fun and funny situations follow. Meanwhile all the time you are just enjoying the action and the fun, there is a serious undercurrent, and a serious lesson to be learned. The fin makes the lesson go down without seeming contrived or preachy.

Not a hard read, I recommend this when you want something that seems light, and is easy to read, but n the end leaves you a very satisfied reader.

Review: Dream Chaser

Dream Chaser
Dream Chaser by Angie Stanton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've really come to love Angie Stanton. I had a hard time putting this book down. As is her style a fairly normal girl finds herself in a situation where she must adapt or or fail. The protagonist must push her limits to find herself and happiness. Can she do it?

Having spent some time in the world of the stage, and having a daughter who is involved in that now this book really spoke to me even more than most of Ms Stanton's work.

She has become a must read for me.

Review: A Little Less Girl

A Little Less Girl
A Little Less Girl by Tess Oliver

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I couldn't put this book down. Stayed up later than I should have to finish it and loved every moment of it. Sad, tender, beautiful and thought provoking. This is the kind of book that makes you aware of how and what you say and the profound effect it may have on others. This is the kind of book that makes you want to find people you have wronged in your past and make it right. This is the kind of book it is hard to do justice to in a review without spoiling things for the readers. Lots of different things going on here, and all of them both real, and believable. this is my first book by Ms Oliver, but I am on my way to Amazon now to find more. Well written from the first moment to the last.

Review: Love 'em or Leave 'em

Love 'em or Leave 'em
Love 'em or Leave 'em by Angie Stanton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

i just loved this book. Angie Stanton is becoming a favorite author for me. she takes ordinary people and puts them in an extraordinary, but highly believable circumstances and explores what happens to them. How character matters when everything is stripped to the core. How no matter what journey you think you are on, life will throw you obstacles and opportunities, can you tell which is which?

They are all fun, thought provoking, a little quirky, and darn hard to put down. She is entering the list with Collen Hoover, Tammara Webber, Nayre Dawn, Steph Campbell and Shirley Miranda where all I need to know is they have a new book out and I want a copy. I don;t even need to know a thing about the plot, I know it will be good.

Review: Saving Francesca

Saving Francesca
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A friend gave me a copy of The Piper's son, and as it was a sequel to this I decided i wanted to read this first. Glad I did. A sad, but uplifting story of you girl whose family is going through some serious issues at a time in her life when everything else is also uprooted. The main protagonist, Franchesca is believable and you really root for her.

I enjoyed it very much, 4.5 stars for sure.

Wonderful fairy tales that are believable in the world of Harry Potter. Like our tales, they teach a lesson while entertaining. A wonderful companion piece to the main series.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I both loved and hated this book. I couldn't set it down, yet I kept trying to slow how fast ai was reading it. Knowing it was the last in the series made me not want to finish it, the pace and plot made me not want to stop.

An amazing, perfect ending to an amazing perfect series. This is a set that will live forever in young adult literature. Books young kids can love, but that parents too will enjoy every bit as much.

Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book continues some of what I loved about goblet of Fire. People were acting like people. Petty jealousies, tempter tantrums and the like. I also love how this book even more than the rest reveals the banality of evil. The world is not split into good guys and the very evil. A lot of evil goes on because of petty and fearful people who would rather accede than fight it.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In some ways my favorite book of the series. I love competition. I liked that petty jealousies, and grudges creep in making the characters feel as real as your best friends you grew up with. plus, you get to meet Lunas Lovegood in this one, and I love Luna.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As the series speeds to its conclusion the evil is near, the action is taunt, and nobody is safe. Dark, scary at times, and a real page turner. As I neared the end I was started to get sad because I knew there wass only one more to go.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I started this book with some trepidation because I had loved the first one so much I was sure this would be a letdown. As it turns out this book was better than the first, a pattern that I found continues through the whole set. The story builds, we get to know more people, and when I was done I couldn't wait for the next one.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

The third book in the series, and the point where it really starts to get dark. With each book I think Ms rowling has improved her craft in every way. Considering she started out at the high end of "Very Good," this is fairly amazing.

Review: Wastelands

Wastelands
Wastelands by John Joseph Adams

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A good collection of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic short stories. I was actually somewhat surprised by how many of them I had read. I shouldn't have been as this is a favorite genre for me. no turkeys on the list either which is nice. I thought the editors did a nice job putting the stories in an order that flowed nicely as well. As good a collection of this genre as I have ever run across. Good for the maven, or the new to the genre.

Review: The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ignore the haters and the bad reviews, this was a great book. It was nothing at all like Harry Potter, but it will go down as one of the most important pieces of literature of the early 21st century.

It did start a little slowly, with lots of background information, and with learning a bit about the people of the community the book was about. When it started to really get going though you were thankful for the set-up. I felt a part of this community as much as the small town I grew up in. Aside from style it made me understand that small towns, and small town gossip and politics are little different in England than from here in the USA.

this story felt very, very real, completely authentic and comes off almost as a memory. Profoundly sad, but then life often is. If you haven;t yet, you should read this book.

I cannot wait for Ms rowling to write her next work. I loved the Potter books, and I loved this book and I still have a hard time understanding how such different worlds could have come from the same mind. both richly drawn and feeling real. I am really impressed.

Review: The Conquest of Gaul

The Conquest of Gaul
The Conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amazing book. Really gets you into the head of Caesar. It also, put in context is one of the most amazing bits of propaganda ever written.

As Caesar marched through Europe he sent back these dispatches. How all who stood in his way were crushed.

when he came back, nobody had the stones to stand up to him.

This is why books are time machines. Even thousands of years later reading his words, you get inside the mind of one of histories greats.

Review: Chancellorsville And Gettysburg

Chancellorsville And Gettysburg
Chancellorsville And Gettysburg by Abner Doubleday

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

this book surprised me. I have read many books written by participants in the Civil War, from privates to the leaders of each side. This is the first one I have read by Doubleday, and I was surprised by its style.

Most writers from that era, even uneducated privates wrote in very flowery language, more artful than we would today. Doubleday writes in a very modern, factual style. Surprisingly modern. It makes me want to find more of his work.

Details I did not know of each battle were well documents, and those parts I knew, I now know much more intimidatingly. this was interesting, and informative and I recommend it for all interested in the Civil War.

Review: Stupid Fast

Stupid Fast
Stupid Fast by Geoff Herbach

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a fun book. It gives you a lot to think about, a few laughs, and if you love football like I do it is even better. I wasn't sure what to expect but the little blurb got me interested. It gave me all I wanted in the book. I wouldn't mind one bit if down the road there was a sequel.

Especially coming from a family that had its own share of dusfunction it was amazing to watch the dynamics in the family at the heart of this book.
