Mitt Romney on Mormon Baptisms of the Dead: ‘I Haven’t Recently’ - The Daily Beast

Of all the obnoxious religious practices out there.  Baptizing dead people from other faiths in the belief they will become your slaves in the after life is pretty high on the list.  Romney has taken part in Baptizing people like Simon Wiesenthal and Anne Frank.  "I haven't doesn't it lately," isn't much of a defense.

Review: How to Save a Life

How to Save a Life
How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked this up today, sat down, and read it through. A warm and touching story that was entirely plausible. As with all of Zarr's books, it is an exploration into what is family? Issues of life, death, love, and grief. As with all of her books, it was amazing.

Review: Double Clutch

Double Clutch
Double Clutch by Liz Reinhardt

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A fun book, albeit fairly predictable. More sexually graphic than most YA reads, but not smutty. Also was clearly written to be a part of a series, like often happens with such it ended rather than finished. I did like most of the characters in it, but most were archetypes you expect to find in YA. One or two I am hoping to see more of in the second and third books in the series.

The NCAA fails raped children.

PSU gets away so light. I'm sorry but 4 years of no bowls and losing less than half of their scholarships for football for 4 years is all they get for 14 years of covering up serial child rapes? Disgusting. Should have been 14 years of no athletics to match the 14 years they covered up the rapes. I am so disgusted with the NCAA right now. Hopefully the big-10 will add to the sanctions.

Harmonic Feedback
Harmonic Feedback by Tara Kelly

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My second Tara Kelly book. I loved the first one, and I loved this one too. A touching story that asks the question, what is normal? I've never been sure, and I still am not, but I am more okay about not understanding it now. If you have ever felt like an outcast, or known someone who did, this is a great book to read. If you've ever been mean to someone who is different, you should especially read this book, it might help you understand a lot more.

Review: Freeing Carter

Freeing Carter
Freeing Carter by Nyrae Dawn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I finished this book more than 24 hours ago, and I still cannot figure out what to write for this review. I try really hard to never include spoilers, and this book is so good i do not want to spoil anything for anyone that has yet to read it.

Yet it is so hard to find a way to explain how darn good, how important, how real, and how heart-rending this book actually is without doing so. If you have substance abuse issues, if someone in your family does, if a friend does, you need to read this book. If you love stories that as real as your own, read this book.

Ms., Dawn had already written two wonderful books, and I was already impressed with her talent. This book ups things to an entirely different level. I've found a lot of good authors on Goodreads, but there are four who should be internationally famous. Nyrae Dawn, Tamarra Webber, Stephanie Campbell, and Collen Hoover may all be classified as Young Adult Fiction, but in reality they are writing some of the best modern literature in the world today. Great stories that contains great truths. Books that can and will change lives. This book is one of those.

Spoiler Warning: A Quote from the book that rings like a bell in my consciousness.

"People think alcoholics are violent. They don't hold down jobs or they're out drinking every night. No offense to the people who believe that, but they don't know jack. Sometime, people do it to DEAL. Because fate sat down and decided, 'Hey, let's see how much shit we can throw at this person before they break.' Before all the skinned knees and bruised limbs keep them from getting up after one last fall."

This companion to Grounding Quinn was every bit as good as the original. Now even though Quinn is more my kind of girl than Syd, I loved this book. It works out your emotions. As a man it embarrassed me because of the fact abuse is so common. As a father of daughters it scared me for the same reason. As a lover of a good story it inspired me to see what people can endure and move on stronger than before. Read this book.

I think I suffered from too high expectations with this book. EVERBODY told me how great it was, how wonderful. So I read it. Meh. I liked it okay, but it really didn't strike me as special, groundbreaking, or different in any way. Yup, it stinks to be 12, we all remember that. Yeah, having family problems stink too. My parents divorced when I was 11, so that should have hit me more.

I'm not sure exactly what I expected from this boom, but I expected more.

Review: Spill Over

Spill Over
Spill Over by Jolene B. Perry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book surprised me in a couple of ways. first off, it was not at all what I expected. Not sure what I expected, but this wasn't it. Secondly it was so very different than Knee Deep or My Heart For Yours, but in a good way.

I guess I expected something a little lighter this time, but once again I got a book with some real depth and meat to sink your teeth into. Ms. Perry continues to surprise, how she can weld a touching romance into explorations of some the worst parts of life (death, abuse, growing apart) and still leave you always feeling hopeful and grateful for what you have I don't understand, but I do love.

She has entered my "must-read" authors list. I'd suggest you do the same with her books.

DON'T PANIC Synopsis released!!!

Up and coming young author Lindsay Paige has released the synopsis for her upcoming book Don't Panic:

Samantha Branson is having severe anxiety attacks. Her heart beats unusually fast, her breath quickens and her hands sweat. Every detail screams in the head that she is the center of unwanted attention. Everyone can hear her thoughts, her heart and her breathing. The silence of the classroom is so loud that focus is impossible.

After an attack lands her in the wrong bathroom, Sam meets Eli who offers to provide help. Faced with the return of her possessive ex-boyfriend and the blossoming of a new romance, Sam must find the strength inside herself to face her anxieties head on.

Don't Panic is scheduled to go on sale October 8, 2012!

Ms. Paige is the author of the wonderful Bold As Love series, which if you have not read, you should! I'm very much looking forward to the new book!

Amplified
Amplified by Tara Kelly

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A fun, fast read. Not your typical romance story, and though it comes to a conclusion, I wanted more, and hope another book will follow to continue the story. Ms. Kelly nails the strange dynamics of a band, especially a band living together, and the things that swirl around them. The sex, drinking, drugs, jaded attitudes and broken dreams. I'd give this one 4.5 if Goodreads let us do half stars.

Review: The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz: A Commemorative Popup

The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz: A Commemorative Popup
The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz: A Commemorative Popup by L. Frank Baum

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is unlike anything else I have ever seen. A pop-up book, but that sounds so small compared to what this is, like referring to The Mona Lisa as some paint, or Michelangelo's David as a hunk of rock. This glorious work is told in a shorter version of L. Frank Baum's original text, with artwork in the style of W. W. Denslow(original Oz illustrator). With sparkling touches of colored foil and Emerald City eyeglasses, and complex pop-ups that are beautiful from all dimensions this is a work of art that deserves a special place on your family shelf.

The Freeh Report, Football, And Children

I took a few years off of blogging, and lately I have mostly been blogging about the books I am reading. To those who have known me a long time they know this, to newer readers, I am a big sports fan. Easily my favorite sport is football, and I love college football. I was raised on a college campus, and went to too many games to count in my youth. I'm a Michigan State fan for many reasons, and a Big-10 fan after that,. This is why I find this so hard to write.

After reading the first 30 pages of the Freeh report on the many child molestations at Penn State University there can no longer be any doubt. All the top officials at PSU, including Joe Paterno not only knew what was going on, but took an active role in covering it up, and allowing Jerry Sandusky to continue to add to his list of victims. There can be no excuse. There can be no mitigating circumstances. Powerful people conspired to allow a person they knew was a child predator to continue to attack children sexually because they wanted to avoid bad publicity. Not only did they not alert the proper authorities as demanded by law, they didn't even cut of Sandusky's access to the things he used to lure his victims, which could have been done quietly. JoPa, a man I grew up admiring because his reputation was that he always did the right and honorable thing even if it was hard, was as it turns out a huge and evil lie. This man chose to allow young boys to be raped, and raped again rather than let his program get a black eye. The easiest moral call a human being should have, and he failed, and failed miserably.

He was aided in this by all levels of PSU. From the President to the janitors. As a lover of sports, as a lover of justice, as a father I can only say that this is completely wrong in every possible way. PSU should have its football program shut down for at least 5 years. Their entire athletic department for at least 3. NOBODY involved in it in the time in question should ever be allowed to work in NCAA or younger sports again.. Many people should be charged and tried with crimes. Joe Paterno should have his name struck from the record book. Every game he was involved in should be turned into a forfeit. He should be removed from the College football Hall of Fame. His statue should be taken down and destroyed, his name taken off of every building or list except that of evil people. He should forever and always be considered a complete pariah.

Also I find it very disappointing to see my beloved Big-10 dropping the ball. Even 8 hours after the report was issued, when every news and sports organization in the world is talking of little else, going to the Big-10 and Big-10 Network pages made no mention of it at all. I couldn't even find a link to the report. This is unacceptable. The Big-10 needs to issue an apology for failure to supervise programs in its domain, and they too should punish PSU in whatever way they can. I would even consider permanent expulsion.

I love football. I love college football I love Big-10 football. There is nothing, let me repeat, NOTHING is as important as protecting children. I'll finish with this: If my child had been raped to protect the “Good Name” (How did that work out PSU?) and the authorities had done nothing, I'd be in jail right now, and some people that richly deserve it would be buried.

Because of Low by Abbi Glines

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The follow up to Breathe, is even better. As a recent convert to YA, I am surprised by how many series there are that are really good. Even more by how many get better in each book. This story again was more than I expected. Not just a good romantic storyline, but very real world looks at families as they really are as opposed to the families people like others to think they have. also an exploration into exactly what is a family. I recommend both of these books.

Review: Point of Retreat

Point of Retreat
Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'm trying to figure out what to say about this book. First off I loved, really loved the first book in this series. One of the best books I have read in many years. Truly great. Much to my surprise, I think this book is even better. Perhaps because I am male the male POV spoke to me more. Perhaps it was because I was already fully invested emotionally in the characters in these books. It seemed so very real from start to finish.

Ms. Hoover is a force to be reckoned with, and although this is also listed as a YA book, it too is quite simply great literature. both of the books in this series should be taught in our schools. So much good advice about life, and learning that no matter what happens to you beyond your control, how you react to it is solely up to you.

Read these books. If you like real stories about real people, read these books. If you love great literature, read these books. Do yourself a favor and read these books.

This book has be completely and totally verklempt. Another YA book that has surprised me and exceeded my expectations for the genre. This book isn't just a YA read, it is literature. About life and all that entails. As soon as I finished it, I bought the next book in the series, and will be starting it shortly. I cannot go into much that happens without giving important things away, let me just say, go read this book, do yourself a favor. BTW buy a new BIG box of kleenex before you start.

Note to the author: Ms. Hoover, Eddie is screaming to me that she wants her own book.

I enjoyed this book. Was looking for a light, quick read, and got surprised again. Though this was an easy and quick read, it had more filling than i expected. A good love story indeed, but there was some gravitas there as well. We've all known a girl like the heroin of the book, the girl whoi had to grow up before her time and shoulder responsibilities kids shouldn't have too, and it was interesting to get a feel of their side of life. Give this book a try, you will enjoy it. Looking forward to Ms. Glines writing more in the future.

The Farewell Season
The Farewell Season by Ann Herrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I very much enjoyed this book. Romance and football. LOL On a serious note this was an excellent book about love and loss, grief and acceptance. Thought provoking, and sensitive this is a book that is better than many in the genre. A nice love story is always good, but this was that an oh so much more. I liked that it ended in a very real way. There wasn't a magic wand cure all end, it was real, and all the more touching and much more impact for that realism. Highly recommended.

I cannot talk about much that happenes in this book without giving things away. suffice it to say, I had a hard time putting it down.

Knee Deep
Knee Deep by Jolene B. Perry

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A terrific book. Took me several days to read because I was so very busy, but every moment I had, I would read a page, or half a page. Gripping, sad, funny, every emotion in play. At times i wanted to hug characters, and at others I wanted to crawl in this book and kick somebodies keister from here to half a mile from Hell.

This is the second book by Ms. Perry I have read, okay one and a half, the other was a collaboration. It most certainly will not be the last. From a technical standpoint this book was well crafted in every way. From a plot standpoint, though it was not groundbreaking, it felt utterly real. A story you could have lived, or a friend could have. Her characters were as real as your own family and friends.

Go read this book, then join me in finding more of her's to read.
